Recode reporter Brian Ries reported that Trump was referring to Amazon, which he called a “great company,” and Apple, which is not.
In an interview with TechCrunch published Monday, Trump said, “You know Amazon?
You have Amazon Prime.
And that’s one of the great things about Amazon is they do have so much power, they have so many options.
So it’s a great company.”
But when Ries asked Trump about Amazon Prime, Trump refused to name the company.
“I don’t know that, but I will tell you, Amazon is a great competitor, by the way,” Trump said.
“They’re very competitive.
And I like that.”
After the interview, the president took to Twitter to share the tweet, claiming that he was referring specifically to Amazon Prime and “they’re a great player.”
Trump also said that Apple’s stock was down 5 percent.
In response to the president’s tweet, Amazon responded that it was in “solid form,” and that the stock had fallen by 2.3 percent in the last 24 hours.
Amazon stock fell 2.7 percent in after-hours trading Monday.
