Steam: Host-environment is the new ‘home’ of computing host
A new way to host computers is making its way to the living room, thanks to a technology developed by a British engineering company.
The new “Steam Host” will allow computers to be hosted anywhere and at any time.
It will also let them work from anywhere and in any timezone, unlike the traditional virtual machines currently available on desktop computers, which have to be run from a central server.
But what makes the Steam Host unique is that it is an open source project, meaning anyone can create an entirely new type of computer, the “host”, and have it run on their home network.
“I can now host a whole new kind of computer,” says Adam Stirling, founder of the company, which is based in Sheffield.
“I don’t need to spend money on new hardware or software.”
The Steam Host will be available for purchase at the end of the year for £40 ($60), and will also be available to rent from the company’s website for a one-off fee of £50.
But the company has set out to make the Steam Home a fully fledged computing device, and it is aiming to bring the new platform to a wider audience.
“It’s really about bringing the technology forward, but also bringing the platform forward,” Stirling says.
“This is about making the technology that we have at our fingertips to a whole other set of people.”
“The Steam Home is the most accessible home computing platform on the planet.
It’s going to be the most popular platform for a long time.”
The project is based on the Linux kernel, a free, open-source operating system which is widely used to run modern computers, including servers, virtual machines and gaming consoles.
But the SteamHost is a completely separate product from the Linux code, and is made up of a single core computer that runs a suite of open source programs.
The SteamHost will feature a single, low-power processor, capable of running up to 10 gigabytes of RAM, a 64-bit Intel Core i7 processor and 16GB of DDR3 memory.
The device will also come with a built-in graphics card, and will be capable of hosting up to two displays at once.
“There’s a lot of room for the hardware to evolve in terms of the performance and the storage options,” says Stirling.
Stirling says that the SteamHome will also allow a computer to work from a remote location.””
But the software is also very important.”

“You can now be in your living room and you can access the computer from anywhere in the world,” he says.
“With Steam, you can be anywhere in your home, and you have a very high-performance machine.”
So it’s very much like a virtual machine.””
I have the ability to control the computer, but it’s really just a PC.
“The new platform will also work with other operating systems, such as Ubuntu, Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.
The company has already been approached by more than a dozen different companies interested in using the SteamOS platform, including Valve, which has worked with the company on the hardware and has developed an application for it.
Stirling and his colleagues at the company hope that by allowing people to share the same computing platform, they can bring the technology further into the mainstream, and also create a platform for sharing more open source software and applications, like the Linux operating system.
But it is still unclear how the Steam host will perform when running software from other operating system types.”
The problem is that the Linux platform is a very proprietary platform,” says Daniel O’Sullivan, founder and chief executive of the Linux Foundation, which represents Linux developers.”
Linux has a lot in common with Windows, and that is that Windows uses the same software as Linux, but is a proprietary system.
“O’Sullivan says that, in theory, it could be possible to make a Linux desktop computer using the new Steam Host, but that it will require significant amounts of development and expertise.”
“So we will need a huge amount of capital to get it to market.””
The Linux Foundation is working on a number of projects that could potentially support the Steam platform, and says it has started discussions with other companies interested.””

“We are in discussions with a number more companies and other organizations about using the Linux Host,” O’Sullins said.
