How to make the best of the latest trends
Tech companies are trying to use the Internet to boost productivity, improve customer service, and even create new kinds of jobs.
Here’s how to get started.
By Ryan Smith, Business Insider In recent years, many tech companies have started to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) as their main means of augmenting human workers.
They use it to automate the process of doing tasks, from scheduling meetings to paying people.
Many companies are also using it to build their own AI platforms that help automate tasks.
And some companies are using the technology to create jobs for themselves, as they try to get more employees.
AI has been gaining popularity in recent years.
According to a 2016 study by the Oxford Internet Institute, AI is now the most popular technology on the planet.
Its adoption is also surging.
“AI is one of the fastest-growing, fastest-changing technologies in history,” says Adam J. Blumberg, a senior research associate at the Oxford University Institute for Advanced Study.
He says the number of jobs created by AI technology will continue to grow, because companies want to use AI to automate their processes.
The most important question facing AI right now is how to make sure its new technology can be used safely.
AI is increasingly used to automate tasks and tasks that humans cannot perform.
For example, automated taxi services often have human drivers.
“If you have a job that requires the driver to take care of things for you, then you have to trust that driver,” says Blumberger.
Blomberg says some companies might be reluctant to make changes to their human drivers because they might be vulnerable to cyber attacks.
But AI isn’t always so easy to control.
In many cases, AI companies have built the software so that it can learn from its users.
“It’s very difficult to tell AI that a certain task or procedure requires a certain level of supervision or expertise,” says Tom O’Reilly, a partner at the law firm Hogan Lovells.
“They’ll build it so that you can tell them when you need to change the job.”
O’ Reilly says there are other risks that AI can take.
For one thing, some AI systems are capable of performing dangerous tasks.
“I think it’s very important to recognize the fact that AI is a very dangerous technology, and it’s not a great idea to do things that could result in catastrophic failure,” he says.
AI systems might be able to predict or react to specific actions and could be vulnerable if they get stuck.
“The biggest danger to AI right at the moment is that it’s going to become very easy to get it wrong,” says O’Brien.
“But I think the biggest problem right now in AI is the fact there are very few rules about what the AI system can do and can’t do.”
Blomber says that’s one reason that AI has become so popular: AI systems have a lot of room to learn and grow.
“In some sense, you can make the AI program smarter by just putting more and more AI on it,” he said.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean AI should always be used to create job opportunities for human workers—or even to create new jobs for itself.
“That’s going have to be a really careful thing to do,” says Lidia Bocelli, a research associate and professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute.
AI can create new tasks that aren’t in the job description of a human.
And AI systems can learn new skills faster than people.
“When you’re building a computer system that’s very fast, it can make it smarter, but you’re not necessarily doing that in the sense that you’re actually creating new jobs,” she says.
Bocellis points to a number of ways in which AI can be more dangerous than it currently is.
“There are a lot more things that AI systems will do that are going to make it harder for a human to do that job,” she said.
“You’re not going to be able really to tell when they’re being very good at doing things, and you’re going to not be able tell if they’re actually learning new things that are not necessarily useful to them.”
O Reilly says he sees AI as “a good example of a problem that AI will eventually be used for, in which you want to create a lot fewer jobs than you’re currently doing.”
AI is being used to do more than just automate tasks, though.
The technology can also be used in other ways.
“People are actually being trained by AI systems on a regular basis, whether they’re in schools or even in companies,” says Bocello.
“So I think AI is going to continue to be used as an important tool for the workforce.”
AI systems, like the ones you might see in a video game, can learn as well as humans.
But it’s also important to be aware that AI may not always be able, or even willing, to learn new things.
